Good afternoon,
Construction activities along and near Garden Highway continue to get into full swing. Here’s a quick rundown of what you’re likely seeing, and will be seeing in the coming weeks.
Beginning Monday, June 10, crews will be working overnight along Garden Highway in the vicinity of Interstate 5 for the waterpipe relocation work. The #1 (inside) lanes in both directions will be closed as crews work in the center median area from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Additionally, the intersection of Garden Highway at the northbound Interstate 5 off ramp will be fully closed for one night next week. Overnight and early morning commuters may require detours. We will provide an additional update next week once we’ve determined which night this will occur.
The white concrete, K-rail barriers that were originally planned for installation prior to Memorial Day holiday will now be placed between the two westbound lanes of Garden Highway in the area of I-5 next week as well.
The full road closure of Garden Highway between Truxel Rd and Northgate Blvd continues to be on hold as we adjust our plans for accomplishing this work. A significant rainy season, which flooded Discovery Park including our original staging/construction office area, meant we had to pursue a Plan B. The batch plant for this work is nearly setup and we’re putting the last few pieces into place before we begin this long-term closure.
Lastly, for our bicycle commuters. The section of bike trail between Del Paso Rd and West El Camino Ave is now closed through November 20, 2019. There is no designated detour for this section and access points to the trail within this stretch are no longer accessible. Cyclists who typically ride here may choose to travel along Northgate Blvd in this area.

Project Background:
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District, along with our partners the Central Valley Flood Protection Board (CVFPB) and the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency (SAFCA), have begun upgrading 24 miles of levee surrounding the Natomas Basin. SAFCA has already completed 18 miles of levee improvements on the north and west sides of the Natomas Basin. There are 42 miles of levee surrounding the basin that will ultimately receive improvements under this project.
While this flood risk reduction work will ultimately make Natomas safer, it will also temporarily impact area roadways. Upcoming road closures, particularly of Garden Highway, will result in increased traffic and likely longer commutes occurring where you live, work and participate in activities.
